Rock Bottom

Well it certainly has been a while since an update and while I feel inclined to apologize, I won't. The hibernation was necessary. Seemingly hitting rock bottom, most of what I produced on my own was complete shit and not particularly worth showing. A few of the better pieces made appearances on my deviantart page (follow the link on the right towards the bottom if you're interested) but all in all the work was stifled and not particularly inspiring.

Alrighty, enough with the bitching, onto the fun stuff. The advantage of falling to rock bottom is the chance to bounce upward and upward I intend to soar. First, the Daily Burrito will return. Slated date: January 1, 2010. Second, working on an art book and a collection of short stories. Both are slated for next May or thereabouts.

I've decided to return to sequential along with the continued progression of pin-ups and single paged illustrations. Why? Because I'm a story-teller damnit.

Updates on the Stormfront

I have no idea what that title means, but it seems important and is thusly chosen.

Sorry for the long delay in updates. I've had some major life changing shit occurring, very little of it pleasant, and as such, have not been drawing nearly enough. I have been drawing, however, working with a team of people on an animated show set to pitch in January of 09. While the characters, scripts, etc. have been copyrighted, none of the artwork is, so I can't really show off some of the characters, doodles, and all around odd shit that I've been coming up with for the show. In lieu of the shittyness that has descened, this show, and of course my Saturday morning chittlins, stand out in what otherwise could be an extremely shitty day to day life.

I'm not supposed to talk like that, I'm supposed to be positive, but goddamnit it's really, really hard sometimes. A month of shittyness can really get to a guy sometimes.

As for the artwork, I do plan to do a bunch of sketchbook scanning before I pack it all up. Not sure how long I'm going to have to wait to get internet in my new place.

Sketchbook Update

So I've been busting it into high gear to get the sketchbook/ character book done by the second week of September. To elaborate further, my goal for the sketchbook, a rather lofty one, is as follows: 60 character pics (most in the style of the entries previously posted), at least 6 different black and white illustrations, 5-6 actual character designs (turn-arounds, heads, poses), and some illustrated pages from a fairy tale. As to whether or not I'll reach that goal is uncertain. As it stands, I have two of the illustrations started and roughly 40 characters, though several of these may be cut in regards to their quality. The ideas exist for the character turn-arounds, but no progress on those yet.

In any case, hopefully I'll be able to reach this goal, though only time will truly tell.

New Sketchbook

Verily it has been a bit of time since the last text post and as such, here is the latest. With AWA approaching at seemingly rapid speed, I'm working on putting together a sketchbook of sorts, filled with some of the people and work on this site and a whole lot of other, unseen work that will make its home here some time in the future. Also to be included, aside from my random people, I'm including a bunch of conceptual art and sketches from the story "The Quest for Imaginus Dreamer," a children's tale that has been relegated to the back burner until, well, until I get a better job. Some of you may recognize some characters from it as it is the next evolution in the tale of Luci and her stuffed bear, re-named Imaginus, or Mags for short.

I'm hoping this book will help get some of my stuff out there and into the hands of some of the right people, he says with typing hands clasped in prayer, but if not, hopefully it will at least succeed in entertaining.

For now though, it's back to creating and working, getting this book together as best I can.

Early Morning Entry

Well, it's early for me.

So I realized it's been a bit of time since my last update, but have no fear, I'm still here and still kickin it. Lately, I've been working on a couple of stories, part of a collection that I hope to push forward, and since I'm trying to be more private with my stories, in case they don't work out or I kill them or whatever and I am forced to explain why I didn't complete them all the while looking like a slacker, I haven't posted any of the stuff from the stories on here. I suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea, I'll have to think about it today at work. Before I went, however, I wanted to pop in and let everyone know that I'm still chugging along. With any luck, of which I will need plenty, I'll have the pitch packet for the stories completed in June.

Oh, and I will get the DB on a regular schedule. Promise. Look for it next week and the weeks after. 5 days a week, X number of weeks a year, and fuck you for laughing at me for not knowing how many weeks are in a year. . .I'm tired. . .52 maybe. . .zzzzzzzzz

Sorry for the wait. . .

But I am finally back with another update, and this one's a doozy.

First off, I completed all the drawings for the chittlins in my class. Our last class is tomorrow and, while it does sadden me, I'm happy that I apparently did a good enough job to get re-enlisted to teach the class in the spring. Woo!

Beginning, I've got my second attempt at Ang from Avatar, this time looking much younger and much less intense.

Second, Timmy Turner riding a dinosaur because, well, that's what I would wish for.

Third, Danny Phantom.

Fourth, Sasha from Bratz, specifically the Pixie Power edition. Or something. I dunno.

Fifth, Chowder. . .because he's just fucking rad.

Sixth, one of my student's own characters, SuperPup!

And finally, my most random request, the Virgin Mary? I dunno. . .again.

Next, I have three characters I conjured up for my previous class.

After Class Aftermath

The title makes this sound far more serious than it is. Class was a success today, whoop whoop, with the idea of giving the kids a basic frame and having them fill in the details keeping all those adorable rapscallions under control. While they worked, I spent most of my time answering individual questions, such as how one goes about drawing eyes, or ears, or angry faces. I'm definitely looking forward to trying this out again next week.

During my time of wandering around the classroom, giving feedback and answering questions, I took it upon myself to doodle on the dry erase board. And guess what. . .you get to see it!! Isn't that a treat!!!. . . .yeah I know, not really.

First off, my desert cat in search of the mighty moon worm.

Second, after one of the chittlins asked how to draw angry eyes, I gave him the whole shebang, angry eyes, angry mouth, angry fist of destruction!

And finally, a girl whose expression captures my emotions about the absurdity behind the idea of one of the little girls in my class: What if America's Next Top Model featured Cats and not Catty bitches (my words not her's) ?

Odd yes, but the true oddity was this girl walking back and forth across the classroom, sassing it up as a runway model and meowing like a cat. I know. Aren't children precious?

CTW. . .Class Time Fun!!

So for my class tomorrow, or later today rather, I decided to follow up on the advice from my boss and give an exercise that's light on the lecture and heavy on the process. Though I still intend to give a lecture about cartoon hands to my older students, I created three different images for my students to work from or to be inspired by. The basic idea is that I give them a photocopy of a basic figure and from that they add the details and make their own figure from it. Hopefully they enjoy. As for the figures I did for them:

Trick Love da Kids!

So as an end of class special for the little chittlins I teach up at the Mable House, I had them all give me a character they wanted me to draw for them and have thus begun to create all the characters. Today, I have the first two, or at least the pencils for them. Though I'd like to ink them before I get them to the kiddies, I may leave them in graphite, try that whole coloring over the pencils thing with the photochops.

The time has come my little friends,

So, after a few days on the grind, I have a few new things to show you guys. First, while I enjoyed my foray into digital inking, the purist in me would not let me be and as such, I have gone back to the faithful brush and nib.

For the Stardust pages, I'm trying something very much difficult for me, something I played around with in college. . .hmmm that didn't sound right, nonetheless, I'm working with very, very quick and loose pencils with the majority of the work being done with ink. And here are the results:
sloppy messy, but a joy to do for sure. Slowly I'm working to combine my anal retentive nature of hatching and minute detail with much more free-flowing line work. Will it work? Who knows!!

Something New

So recently, in an effort to speed up my production time for producing sequential work, I looked towards the Wacom and Painter to see if if could help me out a little. The idea, of course, is to combine penciling and inking into one step.

Here are the results of page one. The inks, while not complete, do give an idea of the final product. Overall, I'm fairly happy with how it's coming out, though due to some outside concerns, I'm not sure I'll make it by the Feb. 8 deadline. Here's hoping.

Back to the Stone of Grinding

As the title states, I'm back to the grindstone. After a weekend off, well most of it, I'm back to work on the Stardust story. I started the pencils today, only to be confronted by how difficult it actually is to keep ones self working without the pressure of deadlines. Oh well, no bother. I should be able to get this thing done within early February, which makes me happy and excited.

Other news, nothing major. I did get a small, part-time gig teaching 8-13 year olds how to draw cartoons at a nearby arts center, which should be pretty damn fun. Starting next Thursday I get to teach the little chittlins the basics of figure drawing and figure construction.

No new content to put up today, though I encourage everyone to check in on the Daily Burrito tomorrow for it's grand re-opening. Hope to see everyone there.

Nothing Much

While not necessarily accurate to relate to my current progress, the title pretty much sums up this blog entry. Work on the web page is moving along at a slow, but at least progressive pace as I attempt to implement some of the ideas into the page.

I finished the first draft of Justice, though the title of the story is certain to change.

Otherwise, nothing much. Hunting for money-makings outside of the realm of comics eats up some time, but given that I only started today, not much of an excuse.

In lighter news, I do at least have an illustration, inspired by the idea of getting a roommate for Ramona the hamster. Hope everyone enjoys!

The Battle Begins

So, after finishing up the rough thumbnails for Stardust, I began what is to be an epic two week battle with Dreamweaver and the interbutts, trying to get the webpage updated by my self-set deadline. Though the scanning went smoothly of the old sketchbook stuff, Dreamweaver, as usual, made life difficult by not doing what I want it to do like the whore that it is. . .rough, maybe, but it's true. Simple alignments can be a major pain in the ass with the program, but then again, I don't have to learn none of that html jive, so, fair trade.

Back to the scanner though, a word of warning for potential investors. If you own the macbook or the macbook pro, do not purchase the Macrotek 160.00 dream machine. Apparently there is something incompatible with the usb drive and the device, rendering the device kinda. . .I dunno, useless. If anyone has successfully gotten one of these suckas to work on a macbook pro though, let me know how you did it. Please, pretty please. Ah well, nuff begging for one night. Also, the canon scanners, particularly the CanoScan LiDE 90 work quite well, though they aren't large format.

Back in the New Year

Okay, okay. It has been way too long since my last post. Moving to Atlanta, Christmas, and New Years put a damper on my progress. Excuses aside, I'm back for the New Year with a plethora of new projects and stories in mind, and hopefully before the year is over, I'll be able to share a large portion of these ideas with everyone. Before the content updates get underway (I finally got some stuff scanned in) I'll take a quick dip through the daytimer:

January 24: The new website launches. A few new content updates, but mostly a new look with a different set up for navigation through stories.

January 28: The Daily Burrito re-launches with a different idea. I liked the idea of themes, but honestly, sometimes I just didn't feel like keeping with the theme on some weeks, or some themes just sounded better in theory. So, with the new Daily Burrito, it's just burritos, some from shows or as parodies, others as the burrito in all its wonderful glory. That being said, without the themed weeks, any burrito will be accepted for the Friday posts, so fans of the little guy, draw away!

February 1: Stardust vs. The Dastardly Duke launches. A little too late for the anthology, but I liked the story enough to just do the thing anyway.

February 29: Justice launches. The first tale from the Dangerbook E.P. woohoo!

Now, with the two month forecast out of the way, let's get to the content updates.

Though I want to keep the story under wraps, I did want to share some of the work from the Stardust story.

Not Dead Yet

I realize that the frequency of these updates is a bit disappointing and for that I do apologize. With Christmas just around the bend, I've been hard at work, crafting various Christmas presents and at least thinking about packing.

For some good news, my scanner arrived (many thanks to Juicy J for pointing the way to Amazon) so I'll hopefully have some updates on the Fletcher Hanks story in a couple of days. Going on the fourth rewrite now, I'm trying to get this story nailed into place, contrary to other possible sayings (I really don't remember my last update haha), but soon the story should be finished and layouts can begin. I am having a bit of a sticky time nailing down certain character designs, but hopefully that won't be too much of a problem for much longer.

Another story is twiddling around my head. All I'll say for now is a pig, a chicken, and the highway.

Business as Usual

So after the nice little break of Thanksgiving, it's back to work. Nothing much to report unfortunately. I've begun work on the anthology piece for Mullins staring Stardust, which looks to be a lot of fun and a submission for a Lovecraft comic that looks to be, hopefully, Lovecraftian.
More to come on these once some suitable art appears.

In other news, I'm working on starting up a branch of Burrito's Abode called Red Bird Studios. The studio specializes in single piece illustrations, black and white, with a single red bird in each piece tying it all together. Meant to be a banner for commissions, I'm hoping to work the ideas at craft shows and to use it to beef up my layout/landscape portfolio. At the moment, I'm looking for avenues to begin building its name, hopefully I'll find a few.

Nothing much else to report. Unfortunately, it seems the scanner I had intended to purchase, given its low price tag and 12x18 scanning size seems to have gone off the market, so, for now, no new art. Hopefully I'll be able to find another way to get stuff up here.

Aftermath

As the dust settles around the close of my final quarter at SCAD, I set about to making some new goals for myself, not to be a work-a-holic, but more so to help convince myself that I can make it to my goal of living off my art, hopefully by the time I'm twenty-five. For now the goals are simple, as I have been known to bite off well more than I can chew, and with school behind me, I'd prefer to not bring all the stress of trying to overachieve down upon me. Don't get me wrong, I by no means intend to slack off, get lazy, or put out shitty work. I simply don't want my last quarter to be a foreshadowing of the rest of my career.

That being said, my goals for this upcoming year are as follows:

Fill 1 sketchbook a month.
Update and Revise Web Page (January 24. I have a list of about 21 major and minor fixes, plus over fifty pages worth of content updates, woo)
Finish Book 1 of All I Want is a Brother (October '08)

Aside from these basic goals, I'm not planning much else. Book 1 looks to be between 80 and 120 pages, or so I think, so that should certainly keep me very busy, while the sketchbooks will keep me in artistic shape. Other than that, I would like to get a start on my danger stories, so I can have more content to add to the site over the course of the year, plus if I can manage to get a scanner, the Daily Burrito will start back up at the beginning of the new year. I haven't quite figured out whether or not I want to keep doing themes or if I just want to put up whatever Burrito comes to my head. In any case, the year looks to be busy, but much less stressful than the previous years in school.

Six Weeks in Hell Pt. 10: The Final Cut

So it ends, so it ends. My final quarter at SCAD came to a close yesterday, bringing conclusion to my six weeks in hell. All in all, it was a helluva run, with a constant, heavy stream of work, little food, less sleep, and way too much caffeine and nicotine. But I finished, best I could, and my apologies for not keeping everyone with me for more steps of the way.

With the quarter, as mentioned, being my final quarter, I feel a certain amount of relief, mixed with satisfaction and fear. But most of all, I feel relieved, relieved that I'm finally done and able to work on whatever the hell I want to work on, not just the assignments given to me.

To close the entry, I give you my final two assignments: a preview of All I Want is a Brother (a test of the style etc.) and a short comic from a story I wrote.

Six Weeks in Hell pt. 9

So nothing major for this update. I'm about to get back to working on A Father's Love (the inks), but I wanted to take a short break to pass on at least one tiny piece of material. Six Weeks in Hell Pt. 8

Exhaustion, severe exhaustion. It's finally kicked in. Not complaining, okay maybe a little, but after 24 hour comics I haven't quite been able to wake up. I'm awake, I'm moving and working, but I feel a funk, or rather in one.

In any case, the Vaticomics are coming along quite well, with lettering to do, touch ups, and some last minute inking corrections. A solid day of work and issues one and two will be done, hopefully by the end of the week. Also, I'm working on a short story called Icarus for Senior project. Roughly four pages long, it should be done, or close to it, by Wednesday/ Thursday. I've been doing some heavy sketching for All I Want is a Brother. Should be starting on those pages next week, woo!

Though I still seem to be feeling the effects of 24 hour comics, I'm still really, really glad I went. Working to finish the comic, I found that not only can I work faster with a brush, but I'm actually getting better to the point that my pencils don't need to be really tight for me to get decent results. Not great results, but with a lot of practice, I may be able to finally work fast enough to have a shot competing for jobs. So, yay for brushes. I've been working mostly with a Number 2 Sable, Windsor/ Newton, but I also use an Escoda brush for dry brushing and I've recently been playing around with a sumi brush for shits and giggles.

Also of note, I have a whole plethora of stuff from Vaticomics, including notes and sketches plus the pencils for issue 1. Enjoy.

Six Weeks in Hell Pt. 7: A Game of Catch Up

Well, as obvious by the dates, I haven't been keeping everyone as up to date as I would like to. After the previous entry, shit got intense and I really grinded down to get work done.

News Time! First, after seeing the preliminary pages and some of the finished pencils for the Vaticomics, my professor pushed me forward to complete at least the two issues I'd already begun. The date was pushed to this upcoming Monday, so hopefully I'll have some pics and scans of the finished pages. Also, I finished the collage project, happy enough with the results, and I'm another 20 pages into the script for All I Want Is a Brother bringing the count up to 41 pages.

This weekend I participated in Scott McCloud's 24 hour comic event where the goal was to create a 24 page comic in 24 hours. Working on a 2x3 scale, I completed a 42 page comic which doubles as part of my assignment for Daddy D.

Hopefully by Sunday I'll have plent scanned in for an image update.

Six Weeks in Hell: Pt 6

On the news side of things, given the large amount of work I have to produce over the remainder of the quarter, it does not look like I'm going to be able to produce the Vaticomics that I truly wanted to create before quarter's end. As it stands with the comics so far, I have the pencils for one issue finished and some scattered panels and roughs for two more issues. I have the scripts for four issues, including the three I've been working on. So all in all, a pretty royal fuck up on my part and a bad case of stretching myself too thin. I'm hoping to be able to salvage something out of tomorrow's class, what with no actual journal entries to speak of, with a pitch-packet of sorts that I've assembled from the pieces I have. Before the nights over, i'm hoping to at least get a nice, inked drawing of the professor character completed and scanned, along with the penciled pages. If I succeed, I hope to post these up online later tonight.

In other news, I'm running really behind on a project due Tuesday for Daddy D, though I feel I should be able to finish it before the deadline. Other homework assignments, including script re-writes for Kneece and panels for Dove are also falling well, well behind schedule. I suppose I didn't name these entries six weeks in hell for nothing. I'm keeping up my spirits, but this is really starting to wear on me.

Unsatisfied with the almost bitter tone of the entry, a side effect of licking wet wounds, I must say that although Vaticomics has, in some sense failed, I do not consider the idea a complete failure. Browsing the net, I'm keeping up the faith that I may perhaps, with a bit more time invested into the idea, be able to push it out into the world in a magazine of the Christian persuasion. Though the grade tomorrow and the inevitable looks of scorn from my professor do little to alleviate the mood of failure, I still bear in mind that which I've tried to remember through any of the monumental fuck-ups on which I've embarked:

Looking at poor Icarus, with wings tattered and flesh charred, as he plummets from the sky, it must be said that at least he reached for the sun. Daedalus, precise and prudent, remains forever an underachiever.

Six Weeks in Hell: Part 5-A Big Ass Update

I know I had intended to update on a more regular occasion for this fun-filled festival of work, but getting down to the scanners and forcing myself to stop working is harder than I imagined. I've been pushing myself so much that I'll actually draw the burrito each day for the daily burrito and completely forget to scan it. Fun times. In any case, I have a slew of updates for everyone this evening.

First, I went back and finished the third page of Whatever and added black borders around the pages for good measure.

Second, while I haven't gotten it assembled, I do have all the pieces of "A Hot Day," the background template and the walk cycle in both finished pencil and finished ink.

Also, I have all 7 pages of A Father's Love roughed out and ready for a nice long bit of rendering.

Finally, I have the complete inks and letters for The Party.

Slowly, very slowly I am trudging through.

Six Weeks In Hell Pt. 4

Slowly but surely I am making my way through the mountains of work, and for this weekend at least, I see a little light on the horizon. While I still have much to do this evening, I have a few updates for you.

First, on A Hot Day, I have inks in progress for some of the pan background and the walk sequence, I also have the pencils of the final part of the background for the sequence.

Six Weeks in Hell pt. 3

So, I've managed to completely finish the pencils on one page of the seven for " A Father's Love," with some nice progress being made on another page. I've also begun the inks for "A Hot Day."

I have another task for the list: a "hands-free," sequential page for Daddy Duncan. The goal is to create a single page story without drawing, writing, painting. Basically we have to complete the page without traditional techniques. I have a few ideas brewing for it, but nothing solid yet.

Also, for your viewing pleasure, I give to you the aforementioned completed pencils.

As a little bonus, though it's not artwork, I'll go ahead and give the official premier of "All I Want is a Brother."

The following is the Prologue for the first book in the story.

All I Want is a Brother

Prologue

Page 1

Panel 1: Black Panel, nothing is visible

Luci: I hope that this has just been a dream.

Panel 2: Gray gradient coming down over the panel. Still fairly dark with very, very low visibility

Luci: I’ll wake up at home, in my bed,

Panel 3: The panel grows lighter. A known light source begins to appear in the center of the panel, but it remains very faint.

Luci: Opa will still be alive,

Panel 4: The panel continues to grow lighter. The light source now contains a white center with the darkest edges of the panel at a mid gray.

Luci: And this whole mess will be behind me.

Panel 5: The panel is now much lighter, almost completely white, with light gray fading away at the edges.

Luci: I won’t be in some nasty hole. I’ll be at home.

Panel 6: White panel, no distinct shapes or figures.

Luci: And Opa will still be alive.

Page 2

Splash page. Luci, a girl aged between 8 and ten years, sits in a dark, cavern-like area, holding Opacus in her lap, more like a stuffed animal than a child. Beneath her shorts, a scuffed knee leaks blood. A dim light spills down from above, illuminating the scene. Broken boards and debris from the floor of the building above her spread across the damp dirt floor of the cavern. Sharp, un-scaleable rocks cover the walls.

Luci: Well. . .poop.

Panel 1: Luci’s POV looking up at the hole above her. Jagged boards jut across the opening.

Panel 2: Bust shot of Luci looking upwards. She sighs, feeling that all hope is lost for her and Opacus. Light gently falls across her upturned face.

Panel 3: Same angle as Panel 2. Luci looks down at Opacus, the soft light leaving her face in favor of dark shadows. Her expression remains similar to panel 2.

Luci: Oh Opa. . .

Panel 4: Bust shot of Opacus. His head hangs limp from careless stiching around the neck

Six Weeks in Hell: Part 1

So I meant to start this little day by day on Monday with the official start of my six week trek through hell, but some deadlines kept my attention on art and not blogging-something it should be doing now. In any case, the title encapsulates the next six weeks and final days of college, and I intend to keep true to daily updates, even if it's nothing but art, the updates will exist. I gave the title because I intend to push myself well beyond the realm of comfort and into a frantic tailspin of work, life, deadlines, and delirious visions brought about from a lack of sleep. Right now, as it stands, this is the list for the next two weeks:

All I Want is a Father - 7 pages penciled
A Hot Day - complete
Vatican Comics 1-3, complete
20 pages of script for All I Want is a Brother
Clean-up/alterations of "The Party"
Daily Obligations to "The Daily Burrito"

20 pages of script(right now I'm at 11) and the finishing touches of The Party are due tomorrow. All I Want is a Father and A Hot Day are slated for Monday. A week later, I have the first 3 Vatican comics. As mentioned, this is just a list of material for the next two weeks. After these dates, more will be added to the list.

I'm not sure if I will succeed as much as I hope to this quarter, but I'm positive I'll be putting everything I can into this work. Speaking of work, I do at least have the pencils for "The Party" ready for viewing.

I'm Afraid that last Bite May Have Been Too Big

And so, as it were, I believe I have stretched myself too thin for everything I was shooting for. Though I'm sure some time management issues will creep up into the picture for some of the explanation, I'm sure more of it has to do with just taking on too much work.

As it stands I have:

1 page of the Vatican comics
4 pages of fairly, finished pencils out of the five for the class anthology (newest assignment from Daddy D)
3 pages of rough pencils for A Father's Love
1 page of transfered, non-finished pencils
3-4 random straggling, rough panels for A Father's Love
Finished pencils of background plate for "A Hot Day"
Finished pencil figures for "A Hot Day"

To top is off, I have a test in History tomorrow. At this point, so late in my college career, a large portion of me wants to blow off the test, earn what I earn and move on. But that nagging, good little student part just seems hell-bent on not letting that happen. I'm trying to decide what to do. Obviously the Vatican Comics need to be scaled back first. I'm contemplating trying to have 3 by the 18th and two written journals. "A Father's Love" and "A Hot Day" have to be finished by the 8th. Jesus, what have I gotten myself into?

Hopefully I'll be able to get by the lab tonight to get some of this stuff scanned in to show off. Hopefully. If I do, look for it around 4-5AM

Well, fuck some people

Just kidding, but not entirely. While I had finished a whole slew of work that I wanted to show this evening (I finished the pencils of the walk cycle, started on the Vatican comics, finished the Whatever story) I wasn't able to get this stuff scanned in. Unfortunately, the only available scanner at the computer lab had a big ink stain, right in the center. Brand new, 3000 dollar scanner with a big-ass, debilitating stain in it's center. People suck.

In lieu of this irritant I bring you a short mini-comic I drew on a napkin while waiting for Chinese food.

A short second

Though fun and an entirely worthwhile trip, I distributed almost 70 postcards, AWA weekend is over and it is time to get back into working hardcore. A Father's Love and Hot Day (the title of my most recent Burrito strip) have to be completed in two weeks. I have 3 short Vatican Comics due shortly thereafter, each ranging between 2 and 4 pages. I have a five page short story due next week that should be entertaining if nothing else, and 20 pages worth of script from "All I Want is a Brother," due sometime in the next two weeks. School is getting fierce and utterly ridiculous.

In lighter news, I have a few quick image updates for you:

First, the intial character sketches of the narrator of Vatican Comics.

Second, the complete scrolling background (pencils) and the rough figures for the walk cycle.

About 42 hours and counting

That number, the wonderful number above, is about how long I've been awake. The project I previously described, the one where I had to use a non-comics artist and a non-comics author, and make some magic, is nearing a close. . .of sorts.

As usual, I've started the year off with a bang by attempting something that just isn't going to get done. It happens every quarter, no matter how much I try and prevent it. Oh well.

Below are the three pages penciled, followed by two of the pages inked. I didn't finish the inks for page 3, so those will be coming somewhere down the line.

So far the school year is off with a little bit of a bang, nothing major though. Presenting work in two of my classes was a little underwhelming with almost no feedback whatsoever, not even murmurs of dislike. Oh well, I can't let myself fall victim to what I suffered from two quarters ago where I let the opinions of others push me to be, or rather draw, as someone I'm not. I supposed I just got spoiled by summer quarter where everyone, for the most part mind you, seemed to be just a little bit friendlier. I guess it was because everyone there for summer quarter was either just trying to get the hell out of school and Savannah, or just cared more about the whole school-time process. I don't know.

I'm working on several things right now, with other projects going to the back-burner in favor of school work. I've begun writing the script for "All I Want is a Brother," going through the outlining of the story and trying to get the major plot points laid out. My project for Alternative/Experimental comics is going through the sketch routine. I'm drawing an interpretation of the Butthole Surfer's song "Whatever (I had a Dream)" that looks to be, well, pornographic if nothing else. The artist whose style I was supposed to mimic for the piece was a little fucked up to say the least, an artist by the name of Harry Clarke. His illustrations for Faust are unbelievable and I encourage everyone to check them out, regardless of how deranged they may be.

Also, though I'm not sure if it will come into fruition, I'm plotting a short, 10 page, story about a kid exploring the tombs of the Vatican. Since my professor for the class is so open-minded, I'm going to see if I can convince her to let me do the comic as opposed to writing a journal or the 8 page paper. We'll see if she allows it!

First Week

Well, the first week of both classes and The Daily Burrito are done and all in all I have to say that both were fairly successful. School seems like it's going to be a challenge, but nothing I can't handle. I just have to keep myself from getting stressed beyond belief and working and I should do just find. With T.D.B., I already touched on my anxiety that it may not go over well with the general populace. I'm still working on not getting my hopes up and at times I still have to remind myself that it's all in fun and, as with any work, that's all it truly should be.

Next week should be fun with the first projects due and the second week of TDB coming in. As I said, I should be able to handle it just fine; I just need to keep myself from over-shooting my ability and my deadlines.

A couple updates for you all: I've got first, the completed pencils for the Burrito pan strip, and second, three of the roughs I've been working hard on for "A Father's Love.

Story Pains

With the school year now officially, officially underway, I've added several projects on top of the few I'm currently working on. No worries though, The Daily Burrito will continue, ever-vigilant, updating five days a week with new Burrito pin-ups.

The nice thing about returning to school, at least in regards to working, is not only the environment, but the wealth of opinions I'm able to receive. In lieu of such opinions and ideas, some of my initial thoughts regarding the short story, "A Father's Love," have, while not necessarily been confirmed, have at least been strengthened. At current, I am rewriting a huge portion of the story, essentially rearranging 3 elements I was particularly fond of in favor of giving a hopefully better pay-off to the reader. The ending is different and everything that leads up to it has been heavily altered as well. I'm still hoping to stay on track with my schedule, though even that may need to be changed up in order to give me the necessary time to make this the best story I possibly can.

In other news, my goals for the quarter involve producing roughly 40 total pages of sequential art and sixty pages of the script for " All I Want is a Brother," hopefully bringing the story very close to its conclusion.

First Day

With the first day of the quarter coming to a close, it certainly seems that this will be one of my busiest quarters at SCAD. With four classes in cauldron, free time seems as though it will be non-existent. No matter, however, I'm confident that while certainly busy, I should see some of m best work appearing this quarter with senior project and the anthology thrown into the mix.

In regards to the anthology, I've almost completed the first four pages of tight roughs, though revisions in the story and personal questions regarding it's pacing plague me and, as usual, slow me down. The goal is to have all seven pages completely roughed and ready for penciling by next Wednesday with the finished pencils appearing the next week. I'm crossing my fingers, but I should be able to manage just fine.

The Daily Burrito launch today went about as expected, with the first post going up and the rules for entry also posted alongside. Though I showed a few of the current pencil sketches I'm working to some people today with fairly favorable reactions, I'm still nervous about whether or not the idea will catch on. With any luck, I'll hopefully have 45-50 consecutive viewers to the blog by the end of the quarter.

The website visits are, as expected, low, but I realize a large portion of this has to do with a lack of public knowledge about the site and it's works. Also, the lack of work on the site, and the slow pace required to finish any new work to go on the site adversely affects, I'm sure, the viewership as well.

Oh well, by the end of the quarter I should have plenty of new work to go onto the site. My hopes are high.

A Father's Love

So becomes the name of the short story I'm currently working on for the school's anthology. After a couple rewrites and a major story change today, the work, in my mind, is finally shaping up to be a suitable story. I've roughed out about 4 pages with 3 more remaining. Hopefully I'll be able to get the remaining 3 pages roughed out before the end of the weekend, but considering that this will be the final 3 days of my vacation, I'm not going to stress out about it too much.

Other than the major story revisions today, I lobbed off an entire page!, I've gotten 2 more Burrito pin-ups roughed out. With final rendering, the first batch of Burritos is on track to release on Monday.

Back in Savannah

That's right. I am back in Savannah, getting ready and gearing up for my final quarter ever. Graduation looms in on the horizon and I couldn't be happier.

I've made some progress on the short story I've been working on, though getting work done at the parental house was more difficult than I would first have thought. My roughs should be done before the weekend ends, however, with the finished pencils following shortly thereafter.

In other news, I came up with an idea for another blog, this one to be filled with nothing but that wonderful little Burrito scamp, forming what I'd like to call, "The Daily Burrito." The idea is that every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I will upload a new Burrito design, which inspires me to believe that I should change the name, but no matter. Whether it's 3 days a week or all 7, the new blog will be up with the first next Monday.

Now, however, it is time for me to return to work, so until next time. . . . . .I don't really know how I'm supposed to end that sentence. *shrugs*

Working through vacation ain't easy

I know that I'm supposed to be on vacation, taking a short break before the next quarter commences, but with the amount of work required of one to get going on the self-publishing treck, I really should be getting more work done during these lulls. Oh well.

I finally, finally got the color section up on my webpage, though why, with only five images, it took me this long. . .well I don't know. Also, I began working on a short story that I plan to enter into an anthology competition with the school. So far:

yeah, nothing much. I'm still working through my thumbnails. Some time, perhaps once more of this process gets underway, I'll give a little behind the scenes post of my working process. I've gotten some more work done on another Burrito strip as well:

I plan for the strip to be a side-scrolling idea, moving through a background plate. More to come on that.

Nothing much else to report on. With all the rain coming down in Atlanta I've come up with some ideas for illustrating rain. Perhaps, if m experiments go well, I'll make a few posts on creating some cool rain effects.

I don't have too much to report on today, packing, cleaning, and getting ready for my trip up to Atlanta took up a large portion of my time. I'm working on getting a color section up on my page that should be available within the week. I updated the blog a little, getting a few more links up. In terms of the art, I'm sketching out some ideas for the new strips, prolonging any serious work on the stories. Tomorrow comes the drive to Atlanta, but after that, hopefully, some real work will get underway.

The Inevitable First Post

Hello and welcome to the blog/news/comments page for the stupendous site, Burritosabode.com! Being the inevitable first post of the blog, I suppose that I will have to get a few things out of the way first. I set up this blog as a way to keep fans updated on the progress I'm making on new strips for Burrito, new stories, and on the city of Burritosville. Also, as it will be quicker than email and even quicker than snail mail, this blog provides an opportunity for fans to leave comments, suggestions, and anything that you may want to see in future Burrito strips.

As of now, I do have a few dates to offer to fans, release dates, if you will.

The city opens October 2008; the exact date is uncertain.

New Strips will begin January 1, 2008, shooting for between 15 and 20

A new story, tentatively titled "All I Want is a Brother" launches in March 2008, just in time for Mega Con

Finally, my first collection of short stories is slated for July 2008, though the date is subject to change.

This should be one hell of a ride. Welcome aboard friends.
